Over the years we saw the sanitation problems in the country and undertook research in the area of recycling EPS waste the major material that has caused a menace in the major cities of Sri LankaEPS is among the most hotly debated materials when it comes to recycling. The material itself, composed mainly of air, is highly versatile, effective in reducing product damage, and cheap. But those same properties make it costly to recycle because it takes up a lot of space. Additionally, that lightweight makes it easily swept away in the wind or water, where it adds to the problem of ocean plastic.

The good news is that EPS can be recycled, although the economics can be precarious.

Along with the environmental protection consciousness unceasing enhancement, especially in a sustainable development society today, people more and more realize the reasonable use of resources has been mentioned at a more important strategic height. Polyurethane foam wastes must be effectively disposed of and recycled, which not only is the requirement of preventing pollution and environment protection but also is the need of the production cost reduction and material utilization improvement. Due to its low density and high volume, polyurethane foam waste is difficult to treat and dispose of in landfills. And incineration will produce poisonous gas.

The need for a clean and serene environment in our communities and cities cannot be overemphasized; the current state of EPS in Sri Lanka coupled with the EPS waste menace makes it so evident the poor EPS record in Sri Lanka. SLB takes great pleasure in presenting this proposal for the recycling of EPS waste.

Expanded Polystyrene Sheets & Blocks

Expanded Polystyrene sheets or blocks (EPS) is one of the most versatile materials available.  Some of its most common uses are packaging, construction, sculpting, floatation, refrigeration, signage, and void fill.

EPS is available in master billets ranging in size from 30” x 48” x 96” all the way up to 50” x 70” x 290” depending upon geographic location.  It is available in densities from less than 1 lb per cubic foot up to 3 lbs per cubic foot with a broad range of compression strengths.

The material can be cut into blocks as small as 1” cubes and sheets as thin as ¼” thick.  Two-dimensional shapes can be provided economically cut on 2D computerized hot wire cutters.

Pieces can be glued together and coated with a variety of different materials depending upon the desired effect.  It can be shaped using a hot knife or hot wire tools as well as band saws, hand saws, reciprocating saws, even electric carving knives.
